Stacks, correlation and leverage only matter in context.
DFS strategy is not about maximizing one number. It is about building a roster whose risk profile fits the way the contest pays. The more top-heavy the payout, the more valuable correlated upside and differentiation become.
Start with the payout curve.
Head-to-Head and 50/50 contests reward survival. Large tournaments reward extreme outcomes. That sounds obvious, but it changes nearly every lineup decision. A safe popular player can be a feature in cash and a source of duplication in a tournament. A volatile stack can be unnecessary in cash and essential in a contest where thousands of entries must be beaten.
Stacks: make one correct prediction pay more than once.
A stack links players whose fantasy outcomes tend to rise together. The classic NFL example is a quarterback paired with one of his receivers or tight ends. When the quarterback has a ceiling game through that pass catcher, both roster spots benefit from the same underlying event.
Bring-backs
In tournaments, a player from the opposing team can strengthen the game story. If Team A is forced to keep throwing because Team B is also scoring, both sides may benefit. A bring-back is not mandatory, but it can make a high-total game environment more internally consistent.
Correlation is useful because roster spots are not independent.
Positive correlation increases the chance that several roster spots hit together. That is valuable when the payout requires an unusually high total score. Negative correlation can work the other way. For example, a defense and an opposing quarterback generally need very different game scripts to reach their ceilings.
Cash: correlation is secondary to raw projection and floor. Tournaments: correlation can turn one accurate game-level prediction into multiple ceiling performances.
Chalk is not automatically bad.
“Chalk” means a player expected to be popular. Players often become popular because salary, role and projection make them strong plays. In contests where merely beating a threshold matters, fading a strong chalk play can add risk without adding enough reward.
In tournaments, ownership matters because you need to separate from the field. The important question is not “Is this player popular?” It is “What am I receiving in projection and ceiling for the ownership I am accepting?”
Leverage: get paid when a common assumption fails.
A leverage play benefits when a highly owned alternative disappoints, especially when the two outcomes are related. The best leverage plays are not random contrarian picks. They preserve enough projection and role while opening a path to a less duplicated, higher-upside roster.
Duplication matters more as the field gets larger.
If thousands of entries can build the same obvious combination, even a first-place outcome may be shared. Salary left unused, a different secondary stack, or a lower-owned player with comparable projection can reduce duplication. The goal is not to make the lineup look strange. It is to create a lineup that can plausibly finish first without being identical to a large portion of the field.
Multi-entry is a portfolio problem.
When entering multiple lineups, exposure becomes another decision. High-conviction values can appear often. More fragile players should usually occupy a smaller portion of the portfolio. Several lineups that all depend on the same game script are not truly diversified just because one or two players change.
Late swap changes the correct amount of risk.
If early players have disappointed, later roster spots may need more ceiling and lower ownership to recover. If early players have greatly exceeded expectations, preserving that advantage can become more important than chasing additional variance. The same player can therefore be the correct choice at noon and the wrong choice at 4 PM depending on what has already happened.
Match the strategy to the contest.

The best tournament lineup is not the lineup with the most longshots. It is the lineup that gives up the least expected scoring while buying the most useful ceiling, correlation and separation.
